Yiannis Kalyvis, going by the alias Devoidness, is an avant-garde artist whose work embraces a multidisciplinary approach that encompasses painting and murals. In his work, he investigates the spiritual and metaphysical dimensions of humanity, exploring variables like identity, transcendence, and the dynamic nature of belief systems. The artist made his debut with a colorful street art performance at Art Athina in 2014 and has carved a niche as one who knows no boundaries in terms of daring.

His paintings provide a kaleidoscopic journey through self-transcendence into a ceaseless recreation. The radiant and audaciously outlined canvas with complex abstraction and imaginative mixed media use invites the viewer into a mesmerizing world of visual experience. Devoidness draws delighted suspicion from the very developments of the structures between the patterns of consciousness that are bizarre, which fall in the repeated symbols and forms fascinated by those spirits that transition through time and culture–potent even as the world surrounding them changes.

He conveys imagery from a wide selection of religions and mythologies, not only as an observation regarding their timeless relevance, but as a commentary on how humankind’s spiritual landscape has been reshaped by cultural changes. It is in a world of Devoidness wherein technology has redefined the course of human fates by upgrading one’s abilities towards the divine in the sense of embodiments of modern-day deities. The ancient deities thus fade, heralding a new revolution-a revolution for the mind, body, and spirit.

Influenced by the likes of Yves Klein, Kazimir Malevich, and other artists like Cullen Washington Jr., Andrew Dadson, and Danh Vo from the Excessivism movement, Devoidness has created a distinct sensitivity to his use of gold. For Devoidness, gold becomes a symbol beyond its materiality that represents a religious iconography: the heavenly light of Christianity, the circuitry of modern technology, and the opulence of Excessivism’s material pursuit.

In 2021, Devoidness graduated with a Master of Fine Arts Degree in Engraving at the Athens School of Fine Arts, one of the most recognizable institutions in Greece. He had by then exhibited his work at such important venues as the Box Gallery in Athens and the National Bank of Greece Cultural Foundation. Basic exhibitions subsequently at Alma and Lola Nikolaou galleries firmly established the artist in the art world.

In 2023, Devoidness represented Alma Gallery at the Affordable Art Fair in Brussels, a decisive point in his international career. Apart from these exhibitions, he has received invitations to teach fine arts in major art schools and to participate in street art festivals in Greece. His art continues to shock, inspire, and challenge.
